 PreTox 2000 Demolition oduct
Description:
PreTox 2000 Demolition is a unique, liquid, over coating designed to minimize leachable
lead levels in lead based paint covered construction and demolition waste. Designed to be
applied as a thick (20-80 mil) over coating to a surface prior to removal. After complete
drying, the component covered with PreTox 2000 Demolition is removed and disposed of.
PreTox 2000 Demolition stabilizes lead in the waste, rendering it non-hazardous for
disposal.
Storage:
PreTox 2000 Demolition in liquid form is combustible. Keep away from heat, sparks and
flame.
Surface Preparation:
PreTox 2000 Demolition requires no surface preparation. PreTox 2000 Demolition will adhere
to a surface that is ready for coating removal operations.
Mixing:
Some product settling is likely. Storing can upside down for 24 hours prior to use may
facilitate mixing. Stir each can of PreTox 2000 Demolition thoroughly using either a hand
paddle or mechanical mixing bar, such as a jiffy mixer, to ensure complete homogenization
before application. If settlement is heavy because of long storage, pour off liquid and
reintroduce to the settlement gradually while mixing. Product will then be ready for use.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO THOROUGHLY MIX PRETOX 2000 DEMOLITION PRIOR TO USE TO ENSURE PROPER
PERFORMANCE.
Application:
PreTox 2000 Demolition may be applied by a variety of techniques, including brush, roller,
and spray (airless or conventional). When using an airless sprayer, it is important to
either remove pump and spray gun filters or to use a 20 mesh filter or larger. The minimum
recommended spray tip size is .045. A .045 to .050 tip should be optimum with a fan suited
for each particular job, ie: .445 for narrow substrates, .645 for broad substrates.
An application of 40 mils (wet) will be adequate for most
uses. Application cost can be optimized by using the Application Optimization Procedure
(see below).
PROPER APPLICATION AMOUNT CAN ONLY BE CONFIRMED THROUGH USE OF TCLP TESTS. NEXTEC, INC.
RECOMMENDS THAT TCLP TESTS BE CONDUCTED BEFORE PRETOX 2000 DEMOLITION IS USED TO DETERMINE
APPROPRIATE APPLICATION RATE. NEXTEC, INC. ALSO RECOMMENDS THAT TCLP TESTS BE CONDUCTED
BEFORE DISPOSING OF ANY RESIDUE AS NON-HAZARDOUS WASTE AND FOLLOWING ALL FEDERAL AND LOCAL
WASTE DISPOSAL REGULATIONS.
Ventilation:
ENSURE ADEQUATE VENTILATION OF SOLVENT VAPORS.
Drying:
Dry time will vary with application technique, film thickness and environmental conditions
(particularly temperature). PreTox 2000 Demolition is a lacquer based coating and dries
solely by solvent evaporation. Spraying PreTox 2000 Demolition will result in faster
drying than will spreading techniques such as brush or roller.
Coverage:
Coverage of PreTox 2000 Demolition is approximately 20 to 160 sq. ft./gallon, depending on
application rate. Average coverage is 40 sq. ft./gallon. Waste, spillage, over spray, etc.
may reduce practical coverage rates. Always figure coverage based on wet mils (100%
solids).
Thinning:
THINNING IS NOT RECOMMENDED. However, when necessary PreTox 2000 Demolition may be thinned
using small amounts of mineral spirits. PreTox 2000 Demolition is readily removable from
tools, application equipment, etc., with the same solvent used for thinning. Aromatic
hydrocarbons such as xylene, toluene and aromatic naphtha may give faster clean-up of
dried material.
NOTE SHOULD BE MADE THAT WHILE THE VOC LEVELS OF THE PRODUCT ARE WITHIN THE REGULATORY
GUIDELINES, OVER THINNING MAY RAISE VOC CONTENTS TO ABOVE REGULATORY LEVELS, REDUCING
PRODUCT EFFECTIVENESS AND PROLONG DRYING TIMES.
Removal:
PreTox 2000 Demolition is designed to be adhesive and remain intact with the component
being removed for demolition. Do not remove PreTox 2000 Demolition from component prior to
disposal.
Note:
Effectiveness of PreTox 2000 Demolition depends upon the integration of PreTox 2000
Demolition with the paint residue. Only sufficient coating thickness of PreTox 2000
Demolition will ensure adequate control of lead leachability.
PRETOX 2000 DEMOLITION DOES NOT RENDER OLD PAINT NON-TOXIC, IT REDUCES THE LEACHABILITY OF
THE PAINT RESIDUE. PRETOX 2000 DEMOLITION DOES NOT ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR CONTAINMENT OR
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT DURING THE DEMOLITION PROCESS.
Application optimization:
By obtaining a control sample and testing PreTox application rates prior to starting a
project, the application of PreTox can be optimized. The following represents an example
of the optimization procedure when using PreTox 2000 Demolition:
1. Locate four (4) areas that can be segregated from each
other so that independent samples can be collected. Area should be large enough to
generate enough waste for a TCLP test, typically 300 grams. For abrasive blasting, four
square feet is usually adequate.
2. Leave one (1) test area free of a PreTox coating. Cover
each succeeding area with 20, 40, and 60 wet mils, respectively.
3. Allow to dry thoroughly.
4. Remove a sample of component from each test area.
Collect each independent sample following EPA or ASTM sampling protocol for component
waste and send to an accredited lab for TCLP testing.
5. When test results are received, choose the application
rate that achieved a BDL (Below Detectable Limits) result and add five (5) wet mils. This
will be the recommended, optimum application rate.
